Is saliva important?

Saliva is a watery liquid secreted into the mouth by glands, providing lubrication for chewing and swallowing, and aiding digestion. It plays an important role in our mouth. Saliva secretion (formation) are protective in nature. Lets see how.
1. Saliva mechanically cleanses plaque on teeth surface. It also buffers (neutralizes) acid produced by bacteria and controls the further growth of bacteria in mouth.
2. Saliva acts as antibacterial agent. It contains various elements like bicarbonates, sodium, potassium, calcium, fluorides, lysosomes, agglutinate etc. that prevents the growth of bacteria in mouth.
3. Calculus formation, gums diseases and dental caries (cavities) are prevented by flow of saliva in mouth.
